Al-Ko has issued a voluntary safety recall for some caravan and camper trailers after fears that solid Al-Ko beam and independent suspension axles fitted with 10in electric brakes could fail.
According to an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) statement released this week, the potential defects relate to “poor weld penetration on 10in electric brake mount flanges welded to stub axles on beam axles and independent suspension rubber axles fitted to caravans and camper trailers”.
“Should the mount plate weld fail, the trailer braking effectiveness will be affected and this could possibly cause an accident and potential injury.”
The ACCC said vans from Jayco, Jurgens, Spaceland, Olympic, New Age, and Concept as well as Preston Chassis, available for sale between September 15-22 last year, could be affected.
Owners of affected vans will be contacted by mail. Consumers are also advised to contact their closest dealer or authorized service agent immediately and book their van in for inspection.
“Those found faulty will have a replacement axle supplied and fitted at no cost.” the ACCC said.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Al-Ko said the company had acted as fast as it could to stop production and rectify the issue.
“We have worked closely with the caravan and camper trailer manufacturers to ensure where possible any affected axles were replaced prior to those caravans being sold.
“We have also worked with them to contact consumers who may have bought a caravan with one of these axles. This is an ongoing process that will continue until we are assured that all axles requiring replacement have been identified and replaced.”
