RV rentals help drive sales

Younger couples are buying motorhomes after a few rental taste-tests

The market for recreational vehicle rentals in Australia is experiencing an impressive surge, with further growth expected in coming years.

Many commentators believe the 'try before you buy’ consumer demand is being fueled by younger travelers hitting the road and experiencing the insta-worthy van-life, with the average age of caravan owners dropping to 33 years old by some reports, and many choosing to rent and try out different types of RVs before purchasing.

Wade and Dani bought their motorhome after trying out a couple of rental options

A good example of this growing trend is nomadic couple Wade and Dani Badby who bought their campervan 'home' after renting for several trips.

“We previously rented a Toyota HiAce 3 Berth HiTop in New Zealand and then a Toyota HiAce 2 Berth HiTop in Cairns to determine what features and size we wanted prior to purchasing our current vehicle,” explains Wade.

“By renting first, it allowed us to get a feel for what it would be like living in a small space and helped us understand the different amenities and layouts that were available to us."

“Ultimately, it really helped us to make a more informed decision as we realised our priorities included having enough head room to stand up comfortably inside the van, a functional kitchenette which included a microwave, sink and fridge and a comfortable
sleeping arrangement.

“Renting provided us with insights that guided us to purchasing a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter Long Wheelbase as the big interior allowed us to have a fixed bed, full bathroom with shower and toilet, big kitchen bench, loads of storage and allows us stand up comfortably,” he says.

The CEO of the Caravan Trade and Industries Association of Queensland, Jason Plant, says the latest trend of ‘caravan hire and trial’ is a great way for people who are new to the RV lifestyle and considering purchasing, to get a feel for what suits them best.

“It’s also great way for RV owners to get the most out of their vehicles and make some extra cash on the side when they’re not actually using it,” he says.

Stopping off along West Australia's Coral Coast

According to Avida Sales Manager Ian Campbell, 30 per cent of first time buyers of an Avida campervan or motorhome have rented a motorhome prior to purchase.

“We encourage first-time buyers to rent a motorhome first as that is the only way you can get a feel for it and work out what you want,” he says.

“Without trialling you won’t know how many seats you want, what kitchen amenities you need, how many beds and what optional extras you might like. The only way to get a real feel for what you want is through trying before buying."

Exploring the far reaches of Australia in a campervan

Since purchasing their Mercedes-Benz Sprinter campervan, Wade and Dani together with their two furry friends have travelled from Sydney to Cooktown, across to Mount Isa, then crossed the border into the Northern Territory, and continued south to Port Augusta.

They're currently exploring Western Australia before heading back to Sydney.

“After renting different campervans it assisted us in knowing that we really wanted a reliable and efficient kitchenette set up that included a microwave, sink and fridge to allow us to prepare dishes on the road and the freedom to eat on our own schedule," says Wade.

“The big interior of the Mercedes Sprinter allowed us to have a fixed bed, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, a big kitchen bench and plenty of storage."

For anyone considering a similar #vanlife adventure, he says it's important to take the time to explore different models, experience the lifestyle, and understand the responsibilities that come with ownership of an RV.

“Renting will provide insights that can guide you towards making a well-informed decision when you decide to invest in your own campervan,” he says.
