RV registrations continue to rise

The RV boom continues with strong growth in registrations and insatiable demand for new RVs across Australia

Cheaper fuel prices and a weaker Australian dollar make travel within Australia highly attractive at the moment. So it’s no surprise that the number of RVs produced and registered locally show no signs of slowing down…

According to latest figures released by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, RV registrations in Australia hit a peak of 586,585 in early-2015.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics data included 528,210 caravans and camper trailers and 58,375 campervans and motorhomes; up five per cent overall on the previous year.

Recreational vehicles have been the fastest growing vehicle type in Australia by registration for the past six years, surpassing light rigid trucks (up four per cent in 2015), motorcycles (3.8 per cent) and light commercial vehicles (three per cent).

The growth in RV registration corresponds with continued strong demand for new RVs in Australia, with local RV production on track to exceed 20,000 units for the sixth year running.

Recently released production statistics for September 2015 showed a year-on-year increase of 8.6 per cent, and an overall, year-to-date increase of 7.4 per cent on 2014 production.

According to the Caravan Industry Association, 16,205 towable RVs and 783 motorised RVs were built to the end of September. That puts the industry on track to surpass the previous peak of 22,083 units set in 2011.

It also shows increasing demand for new motorhomes after a long period of flat or declining sales, with the motorised RV sector on track to build more than 1000 units in 2015.

The biggest slump in production is in fifth-wheel caravans, with just eight units produced until the end of September – well down on the 32 fifth-wheelers built during 2014.

Other highlights from the 2015 industry report:

- The Mandurah region, south of Perth (postcode 6210) continues to be the most popular region for RV registrations.
- Queensland has more than a quarter (26 per cent) of registered caravans and motorhomes in Australia.
- The most common weight range for caravans/camper trailers is 500-900kg (3-5 tonnes for motorhomes), although the biggest growth was in caravans weighing 2001-2500kg.
- The average age of a motorhome in Australia has increased slightly to 17.9 years
