Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the Kombi campervan and Airstream caravan (or travel trailer, as they call them in the US) are icons of the RV world.
Down under, the shiny ‘silver bullets’ remain a rare sight, despite the official arrival of the American brand in Australia in 2012.
You’re more likely to see a classic VW camper, whether driven around by modern-day hippies in Byron Bay, hired out by an enterprising rental business, or in someone’s workshop being lovingly restored.
The Kombi was a driving force behind the growth of local motorhome manufacturers like NSW’s Trakka and Melbourne’s Sunliner, which introduced its first model, a pop-top VeeDub camper, 40 years ago.
Even if you’re not into the RV lifestyle, it’s hard to ignore the two brands with regular references in pop culture including movies, TV shows, advertisements… not to mention as commercial ‘billboards’ for small businesses looking to stand out.
Even Jayco boss Gerry Ryan is a fan, with an Airstream van parked at Jayco’s Dandenong factory destined for duty at Ryan’s Michelton Winery.
