Melbourne’s Roma Caravans is turning the clock back to the 1950s, with a new 15ft single-axle budget caravan called ‘Avatar’ due to break cover around late-June.
The full sandwich-panel walled van will reportedly take some of its retro styling cues from the similar-sized Bondwood caravans that Roma used to build in the 1950s (an example is pictured), however its combined shower-toilet ensuite is a nod to modern day comfort expectations.
“Many people have fond memories of the sort of caravans we used to build,” says Mark Palmarini, whose father Tony built Roma up to its present status as one of the respected ‘elders’ in the Campbellfield, Victoria caravan industry.
“In some cases they were the caravan they went on family holidays to the beach in and with a lot of smaller tow cars, like compact SUVs around now, we think it will find a ready market.
“Its name is designed to appeal to a modern, younger market.”
At the other end of the scale Roma, whose caravan origins date back to 1928, is currently building a monster 4000kg tare weight, 35ft long tri-axle caravan for a Queensland customer who intends it to be his not-very-mobile home in the coalfields.
