Premium Melbourne caravan manufacturer Roadstar has jumped on the tiny caravan bandwagon with a new, entry-level teardrop camper model about to join its range of full-height, full-size caravans.
The Roadstar Colt, which first broke cover as a prototype at the 2016 Border Caravan & Camping Expo in Wodonga, Victoria, promises similar styling and high quality fit and finish to the rest of the Roadstar range.
It will also come standard with a range of ‘big van’ features such as a 90 litre water tank, two 4kg gas bottles, 120Ah battery, 135W flexible solar panels and LED lighting,
The rear, built-in kitchen is equipped with a 28 litre fridge and combination three-burner cooktop and sink. Roadstar is also promising an 8ft 6in (2.5m) internal length – enough sleeping space for two tall adults, along with some storage cabinets, roof hatch and shelf for a TV.
The Somerton, Victoria-based manufacturer is about to build another, slightly larger version with similar, high-tech construction to Roadstar’s latest composite bodied GT Sport MK2, which broke cover at last month’s Melbourne Leisurefest and features new fibregless sandwich panel construction including a one-piece panel for the front, rear and roof sections.
“The whole idea is to have an affordable, entry-level model in the Roadstar range, before customers take the next step up (into a full-size caravan),” explained Roadstar Caravans boss Ken Nizam.
“For a little camper it will be fully insulated, with a little kitchen at the back, solar panels, fridge, and radio… You’ll be able to just hook it up and take it anywhere you want,” he said.
Various options will be available including roof racks, a bat wing awning, and possibly a roof-top tent.
Roadstar is yet to announce final specifications and pricing, but Nizam expects it to start at around $15-$20,000, which is about the price of Avan’s Weekender, which comes with an external, slide-out kitchen and rear annexe.
Tiny vans are all the rage right now, with two of Australia’s biggest RV manufacturers Avan and Jayco selling teardrop campers along with a number of new boutique brands including Gidget, Wood on Wheels and Riptide.
