We're all familiar with the term grey nomads, coined more than 20 years ago, with spin-offs like digital nomads, newlywed nomads, and even blonde nomad and gay nomad, making the rounds more recently.
But could this be the year of the green nomad, or the rise of the RV traveller that seeks to hit the road for an extended period but lower their carbon footprint by holidaying in an all-electric rig?
There are already strong signs that fossil fuel-reduced RV travel is on the rise, or at least more accessible to the masses, as well as those who want to take advantage of the growing network of EV charging stations around the country.
More and more caravan manufacturers are offering 'gas free' caravans, often with large battery and solar power set-ups, while there are an increasing number of battery-powered tow vehicles available on the market that can tow decent-sized trailers, like the recently introduced Kia EV9 SUV that can tow as much as 2500kg.
EV motorhomes are also set to hit Australian roads soon, with a number of battery-powered commercially-oriented vans from various manufacturers either available now or in the near future that could easily be converted to battery-powered motorhomes.
ABC News recently highlighted one example of the rise of the 'green nomad': Perth couple Tim and Renae McLennan who are setting off with their two kids on an all-electric powered RV trip courtesy of their Kia EV9 SUV, hitched up to a gas-free modified New Age Wayfinder camper trailer which has an ATM of around 2000kg.
With a new EV charging network being rolled out along the West Australian coastline, the McLennans' have estimated a maximum 270km stint between 'charge-ups' during their fume-free family adventure. For the full story, watch the video below..
