Low-volume custom caravan builder Rhino has introduced a new 15ft version of its entry-level Meerkat model.
Design for dirt road adventures, it’s the biggest yet in the relatively new Meerkat range, with previous versions measuring 10ft and 13ft long in the body.
Currently for sale for $65,000, the first, single axle 15ft Meerkat XL Cross Country was completed just prior to Christmas. Similar to other Rhino vans, it’s built with a unique, heavy-duty galvanised chassis and 30mm composite body panels with checkerplate reinforcement, with the 15ft Meerkat riding on Cruisemaster CRS independent suspension. “We have worked really hard to produce the typically tough Rhino caravan with all the extras you might like” the company says on its Facebook page. Rhino says its latest full height van is set up for free camping with features including two 150W solar panels, two 125Ah deep cycle batteries, 175 litre compressor fridge and two 80 litre fresh water tanks and one 65 litre grey water tank.
It offer plenty of comfort too, with both an internal and external kitchen, combination shower/toilet as well as an external shower, washing machine, microwave, audio and TV systems, reversing camera, roof-mounted air-conditioner, two internal fans, 23 litre hot water service and a roll-out awning.
The internal layout includes a queen-sized east-west bed with pillow-top mattress, café dinette and there are plenty of internal and external storage options including a large wardrobe.
In business for only a few years Rhino says it produces only “a handful of quality units per unit, with a full hands on approach, not squabbling over whether we use five or 10 allocated screws… the only area that we fail in is putting more than required into our vans”.
With models ranging in price from $55,000 to well over $100,000, the south-east Queensland manufacturer boasts a full order book for 2017 despite competing in the increasingly competitive heavyweight off-road segment against the likes of Bushtracker, Kedron and Australian Off Road.
