One of the advantages of hiring an RV from a large, nationwide rental company is that you can pick it up in one state and drop it off in another, although you usually have to pay extra for the privilege.
In the case of Apollo Motorhome Holidays, for example, picking up a motorhome or campervan in Melbourne and dropping it off in Broome attracts a one-way charge of around $300, plus an extra ‘Broome’ surcharge of around $750 (not including daily rental fees).
But the flip-side of this is that canny and flexible travellers can take advantage of regular deals designed to facilitate the return of motorhomes to their state of origin or deliver them to the next paying customer.
One of the latest offers from Apollo, gives travellers the chance to holiday (albeit briefly in many cases) in one of its two-, four- or six-berth motorhomes for just $1 per day. As part of the Great October Relocation sale, Apollo will also pay up to $500 towards fuel costs.
With more than 100 deals offered, the pick-up and drop-off locations include most Apollo depots around Australia except for Hobart, with most routes covered although missing from the list is the popular Melbourne-Alice Springs leg.
In most cases there’s a strict time limit on how long you get to reach your destination, with most allowing between three and six days, depending on the distances involved.
For example, you could grab a three-berth Apollo HiTop Camper in Melbourne on Octber 31, and deliver it to Cairns, before November 6. Along with the $6 rental fee, Apollo will contribute up to $500 to cover fuel costs of the 2800km road trip.
But they’re not all rush jobs, with Apollo allowing more than two weeks for a six-berth motorhome to be delivered a similar distance from Darwin to Cairns. Available for pick up now, it doesn’t need to be in Cairns until November 2, plus you get up to $500 to cover fuel costs.
Apollo says the deals are a result of “an extremely busy school holiday season”. Check out the Apollo website for full details.
