Queensland’s Aussie Swag is the latest Australian manufacturer of premium off-road camper trailers to adopt an automatic opening and closing feature for its hard-floor models.
Joining the likes of Mountain Trail, Complete Campsite and Pioneer, Aussie Swag has introduced a power-operated rear-folding mechanism as a $3000 option on both the $44,800 Rover LX and top-spec $59,950 Ultra D models. Using Linak electric actuators and a worm drive, the roof mechanism operates by pressing a switch on the camper, or by remote control, with an over-ride feature including automatic cut-out to prevent any damage to the camper.
Opening up takes around 30 seconds once the roof/floor is unlatched, and about twice as long to fold up.
“The camper doesn’t really need (an electric set-up) but unfortunately people think they do so we have to have it there as an option,” explained Aussie Swag’s Scott Fernance.
He predicts most buyers will opt to pay extra for the convenience of electric operation.
Another major change for the 2017 Aussie Swag range is the full width, front storage and fridge box is now constructed from new fibreglass composite panels rather than zinc anneal metal.
Designed to trim some weight from the top-spec Ultra D, which currently tips the scales around 1400kg unladen, the 29mm thick insulated panels are supplied by Queensland’s Styromax and are similar to that used by rival manufacturers Rhinomax and Mountain Trail. “The new panels are for weight and strength as well as insulation, because that’s where the fridge goes,” he said.
Fernance said Aussie Swag is looking at incorporating more composite materials in the future to help keep weight down as well as keep pace with the competition.
