Rare retro beauty for sale

Unique 1960s Holiday House Geographic could be yours for a cool quarter million dollars

Due to their inherently boxy shape designed to maximize the amount of usable interior space, caravans are rarely described as beautiful or indeed sexy.

However, there is the odd exception, like this extremely rare and drop-dead gorgeous 1961 Holiday House Geographic Model X, currently for sale in the US for a cool US$250,000.

Rare 1961 Holiday House Geographic is a real stunner

Meticulously restored by Oregan-based vintage caravan specialists Flyte Camp, the Holiday House Geographic for sale is believed to be one of two in existence. With looks reminiscent of a classic, big finned and chrome bumper American car of the period, it’s been described as “among the most desirable vintage travel trailers in the world”.

The Holiday House's flamboyant styling was the work of industrial engineer, Chuck Pelly, who also penned the Scarab race car and founded Designworks USA, or BMW's California Studio.

Pelly was commissioned by David Holmes, President of the "Harry & David" fruit company, to design the limited-edition fibreglass travel trailer. Dubbed the "Trailer For The Rich" it’s believed as few as seven were built, retailing for the then sky-high price of US$8500.

Glamorous interior is very un-caravan like

Completely rebuilt from the chassis and frame up and finished off in two-toned champagne and moss green with bronze colored pin-stripping., the unique Holiday House lives up to its name inside, with wall-to-wall polished timber including Walnut for the walls, cabinetry and floor.

The bathroom/dressing room features Marmoleum flooring, Walnut and Marmoleum countertops and a Stainless Steel shower with a Teak hardwood shower floor insert.

Flyte Camp says the Model X has also been updated for the modern era, with a range of modern RV features including LED lighting, continuous hot water, cooktop and fridge, air-conditioning, 32in surround sound TV and a four AGM battery system with 2000W inverter.

Wall to wall walnut in the ensuite

No detail has been overlooked in the restoration, says Flyte Camp, right down to the laser-etched stainless steel transition with "Geographic Model X" inscribed.

Since its completion last year, the super-stylish van has featured on magazine covers and TV shows, and picked up awards at shows.
