RV ownership in Australia is on a high, with nationwide registrations of both caravan and campervans peaking at a record high of 615,301 for the year ending January 2016, according to the Caravan Industry Association of Australia.
Made up of 554,34 caravans and 60,957 campervans, the industry body said it represents a 4.9 per cent increase on the previous 12 months, and means recreational vehicles continue to be the fastest growing vehicle by registration type in the country.
The number of caravans and campervans on Australia’s roads has been steadily increasing over the last five years, with caravan registrations growing by 30 per cent since 2011 and campervans by 20 per cent.
The area around Mandurah, south of Perth, contains the largest concentration of registered RVs of any postcode in the country, while Queensland is the state with the largest RV fleet, and also the youngest with an average age of 14.7 years.
The current average age of registered campervans is 17.8 years with almost two thirds (65 per cent) running on diesel and almost three quarters (74 per cent) having a Tare weight between 1000kg and 5000kg.
In the trailerable RV segment, which includes caravans, more than two-thirds (67 per cent) weigh less than 1500kg. However, the industry body says the biggest growth in the past year has been in the 2000-2500kg category, reflecting the trend towards
bigger and better equipped rigs as well as heavier off-road caravans.
