Queenslander caravanners are being offered more free safety checks as part of a new 'VanSafe' program run by Caravanning Queensland in conjunction with the Queensland Government.
The no-cost caravan weight and safety education sessions are open to caravan, camper trailer and motorhome owners, and include an RV combination weight and safety inspection, towing masterclass, expert advice and towing and safety product displays.
According to Caravanning Queensland, during each free safety inspection "no fines or breaches will be issued. It is 100 per cent an educational activity with the ultimate aim of ensuring that you are travelling safe and compliant".
The state of Queensland boasts the highest number of registered recreational vehicles in the county (201,477), ahead of Victoria (185,507) and New South Wales (182,764).
According to the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads - Land Transport, Safety and Regulation, 297 people died on Queensland roads in 2022, the highest number in over a decade.
“While all RV owners and drivers have a responsibility to educate themselves on safe caravanning practices, the more we can do to support both new and seasoned drivers, the more confident they’ll become and the safer our roads will be," Caravanning Queensland CEO Jason Plant said.
“We’re proud to partner with the Queensland Government on this exciting new program which will see an additional fourteen events added to our existing safety program in locations spanning as far south as Logan to as far north as Cairns."
The first VanSafe event is in Maryborough from April 21-23, with 13 other locations scheduled on different dates throughout the year.
