Production Tesla Cybertruck caught testing

Five seat, 3400kg-tow rated pure-electric off-roader hits the track

New drone footage has given us our clearest look yet at the upcoming production version of the Tesla Cybertruck ahead of its 2022 launch.

Capturing what looks like a near production-ready Cybertruck, the new video appears to show the full-size pick-up testing on a small track at US brand's Austin, Texas, plant.

With more than one-million pre-orders, including many in Australia, the $US39,900 ($A53,600) Tesla Cybertruck has fast become one of the most eagerly-anticipated cars of all time but has been hit with multiple delays since its original 2019 reveal, including one related to the semi-conductor shortage.

The new images show how Tesla plans to evolve the Cybertruck to make its radical wedge-shaped design road legal.

Fresh changes incorporated in the Cybertruck's design is a pair of new headlamps above the bumper that sits either side of a new air intake that both sit below the light bar.

Both larger door mirrors and an enormous wiper have also been introduced as the Cybertruck has evolved from concept to production reality.

To clear enough of the screen, engineers have been forced to employ a wiper blade that stretches the entire vertical length of the already massive screen.

Following the video dropping, Tesla boss Elon Musk aired his grievances over the inelegant use of a conventional wiper set-up to clear the screen: "The wiper troubles me most", he admitted during one of his trademark Twitter exchanges, adding that a "deployable wiper that stows in front truck would be idea" but implied that such a set-up would be "complex".

There's still no word on final spec for the final 2022 Cybertruck but the original concept featured 200kWh lithium-ion battery packs and are expected to be made available for the Cybertruck, which should provide a cruising range of more than 800km, Tesla claims.

Top-spec triple-motor Cybertruck models are claimed to accelerate from 0-60mph in less than 3.0 seconds, with a top speed of over 200km/h.

All Tesla Cybertruck models have a payload of 1588kg and the base model is rated to tow 3402kg, while triple-motor versions will have a towing capacity of at least 6350kg.

Australian buyers can pre-order the vehicle via the official Tesla website with a $150 refundable deposit, with single-, double- and triple-motor variants all on the menu. Aussie buyers will be able to configure their vehicle “as production nears in 2022”, according to information currently on the site.

No date has been locked-in for when the Cybertruck will touchdown in Australia but since the Tesla pick-up only enters full-scale production in 2023, considering the unprecedented demand it's thought its arrival here could be pushed back to 2025, at the earliest.
