Pricier new Toyota Prado arrives

Improved safety and higher prices for popular 3000kg tow-rated off-roader

An upgraded 2021 Toyota Prado has been released, bringing minor safety and design upgrades for selected variants – and price increases across the range.

The latter amount to an extra $990 for entry-level GX and volume-selling GXL grades, bringing the Toyota Prado’s admission price to $60,830 plus on-road costs, and $777 for the premium VX and Kakadu, which now tops the line-up at $87,807 plus ORCs.

That means there’s a greater price overlap than ever between the ‘son of LandCruiser’ and its bigger 200 Series brother, which is currently priced from $80,996 but effectively discontinued before the all-new and more expensive 300 Series replaces it late this year.

Minor update for three tonne tow tug

The latest price hike for the Toyota Prado, which is on track to be the top-seller in its segment for 12 of the past 14 years, follows a major upgrade announced in August 2020, when it joined the HiLux and Fortuner in upgrading to a more powerful 150kW/500Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel.

This month’s relatively minor update sees the base GX and most popular GXL variants join the VX and Kakadu in fitted as standard with blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

They join existing Toyota Safety Sense equipment including a pre-collision safety system (autonomous emergency braking) with day/night pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, lane departure alert with steering assistance and high-speed active cruise control.

In addition, the cheapest GX model brings a chrome-accented grille and puddle lamps, while VX and Kakadu variants receive larger new 19-inch alloy wheels with ‘Active’ and ‘Prestige’ designs respectively.

More driver safety aids for popular Prado

It remains to be seen whether there will be any more upgrades for the current Prado, which dates back to 2009, before it’s replaced by an all-new and potentially more powerful model expected in 2024.

All Toyota Prados continue to come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, 3000kg braked towing capacity, 7.9L/100km official combined fuel consumption and 150 litres of fuel capacity (unless you specify a flat tailgate, which moves the spare wheel to under the vehicle and is a no-cost option for GXL, VX, Kakadu variants).

Other options include premium paint ($675), a third-row seat (GX only: $2550) and leather-accented premium seats (GXL only: $3470).

How much does the 2021 Toyota Prado cost?
GX five-seat – $60,830 (+$990)
GXL – $67,530 (+$990)
VX – $77,157 (+$777)
Kakadu – $87,807 (+$777)

* Prices exclude on-road costs
