Police are warning travellers to be wary of opportunistic thieves, as thousands of people dust off their caravan or camper trailer and prepare to hit the road after months of lockdown.
Over the recent Queens Birthday long week-end, a number of guests at the Edithburgh Caravan Park on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula had items stolen, including three mountain bikes, two eskies, a portable gas BBQ and three fishing rods
Sergeant Nigel Dalton from Mackay Police in Queensland said it's important to keep in mind a few safety and security tips before heading off.
"Imagine having a well deserved holiday interrupted by a theft that could be preventable," he said.
Sergeant Dalton provided the following crime prevention tips to help keep your caravan holiday incident free:
Choose a well-lit part of the van park. A thief doesn’t like being lit up!
Remove temptation – never leave valuables visible – consider a security box or safe.
Close the curtains so that interior of the caravan is not as visible, and consider installing sensor lights on the exterior of your caravan or trailer.
Lock all windows and doors – don’t leave a spare key outside the van under the mat or in the BBQ. A thief will look there too.
Mark or engrave all your property with the Queensland Police Service ID code – this reduces the value to the thief and makes the returning of missing property faster.
Photograph property that can’t be engraved (jewellery etc), and record details of serial numbers.
"Remember your possessions are as attractive while on holiday as they are when you are at home or at work," he said.
