According to Oz Parks CEO John Corrall, his is the first national caravan park chain to adopt the Green Park scheme launched in mid-2007. "We are very conscious of the need to develop a sustainable industry, and wanted a scheme that would allow our members to do something positive for the environment," he says.
For a member of the chain to become Green Park-certified, they have to meet five sustainability criteria - greenhouse gas reduction, water conservation, waste and recycling management, habitat and biodiversity, and social and community.
"We were particularly mindful of some of our remote members where a lot of what city and regional operators take for granted is not available, like green power and basic recycling. To that end, the challenge was to develop a program that all parks could complete," Mr Corrall says.
To date almost 40 per cent of the chain members have been certified, from Hervey Bay, Qld, to Phillip Island, Vic, and from Sydney to Cobdogla west of Renmark in SA, with the others working towards their certification.
The Oz Parks chain was launched in July 2005 when a number of individual park owners affiliated under the Oz Parks banner to cater not only for families, but also to travellers who do not require all the bells and whistles offered by some organisations. A number of the parks are basic while others offer a wide selection of facilities, but all offer clean amenities.
