On The Move Caravans has ripped the covers off a potentially game-changing new large off-grid caravan; the fourth, sub-$100K model in its full composite imported range that includes the Adventure off-roader and Crossfire compact hybrid released earlier this year.
The all-new 20ft 8in OTM Grenade 6.3 range-topper is the latest in a line of eye-catching new Chinese-built vans from the On The Move brand which was acquired by the Caravan HQ dealer network a couple of years ago.
The Grenade badge has been previously used on a number of big Melbourne-built off-roaders, but the 'GEN 2' Grenade takes it to a new level with a unique mix of 21st century RV 'party tricks', including an internal electric bed, a clever pull-out rear storage platform, and the option of a four-camera external display.
The new value-packed, tandem axle couple's van comes loaded up with an impressive array of upmarket and off-grid features as well as unique storage options, for its competitive $100K starting price.
To make the most of an above-average 817kg payload (2683kg Tare, 3500kg ATM, with option for 4000kg), the OTM Grenade 6.3 incorporates some clever external storage options, including a large front toolbox with a fridge slide-out and a vertical integrated front tunnel locker with adjustable shelving. The drawbar-mounted spare tyre slots in behind the toolbox and when required, rolls down to the ground via a neatly packaged, integrated fold-out side ramp that also holds the tyre in place when travelling.
In what appears to be another industry-first, the OTM Grenade's rear bar with its two lockable compartments, slides out from the back of the van to reveal a couple more sealed compartments for storing tools and other smaller items.
Like the other OTM imported caravans, the 20ft 8in Grenade also stands out with an automotive-inspired rivetted chassis with bright yellow Esy-Tow Sport X Rally suspension employing twin long-travel, centrally-pivoting tubular steel wishbone A-arms, manually adjustable air bags (eight in total) and twin telescopic shock absorbers per wheel.
Its lightweight and fully insulated 'timber free' construction features a single-piece 55mm thick fibreglass composite roof, 30mm fibreglass sandwich panel side walls, and a 40mm honeycomb composite floor, together with a Raptor-style external coating, chassis and roof-mounted brush bars, and flat double glazed tinted RV windows.
While the 'rot free' construction continues inside with lightweight aluminium clad composite panels used for the interior cabinetry, instead of the usual timber ply.
Other standard external features include a Cruisemaster DO-35 coupling, 16in alloys with off-road tyres, and a 200AH lithium battery system with 400W rooftop solar, a 2000W inverter and Projecta control system, to go with 200L fresh and 100L grey water capacity.
To free up space inside, a motorhome-style electric-powered queen bed with 1500m x 1900mm memory foam mattress drops down from the ceiling over the rear club lounge/dinette (to deliver a desirable north-south bed configuration), and there's enough space on the leatherette lounge to seat up to eight people.
The OTM Grenade 6.3 also gets an appliance-packed kitchen including sink with high-rise mixer tap, gas cooktop and grille, convection microwave and 188L compressor fridge, while the full width front ensuite incorporates a separate shower cubicle and cassette toilet, and a vanity with sink and low-mounted, front-load washing machine.
Internally, the OTM Grenade 6.3 also gets a Fusion stereo, TV mounts and a Dometic rooftop air conditioner, along with black sinks and tapware, LED mood and safety lighting, and quite a few storage options throughout the front living and bathroom areas.
While pricing for the new OTM Grenade 6.3 starts at $99,990 drive-away, a Queensland-based OTM Grenade 6.3 currently advertised for sale on caravancampingsales comes fitted with a number of options including a four-way reverse camera system, external TV box, on-board air compressor, 12V DRS (Dust Reduction System) and a third freshwater tank, for its $105,890 asking price.
The multiple external camera option includes an internally mounted display with split views including underbody vision to assist when navigating bumpy or watery terrain -- another Australian RV industry 'first'.
Watch the video below for a walk-through demonstration of some of the unique features of the OTM Grenade 6.3 prototype, while the van will also be on display at various shows around Australia later this year including the Let’s Go Sunshine Coast Caravan & Outdoor Expo at the Nambour Showgrounds (August 16-18, 2024).
