Old and new at Wodonga

Vintage campers join spa bath vans, Aussie motorbikes and poisonous snakes at annual Border show

There will a touch of the old to go with the brand spanking new at the 5th annual Border Caravan & Camping Expo, which runs from August 14-16 at the Wodonga Racecourse, right on the Victorian and NSW border.

Alongside the latest fibreglass-walled, entry-level Starcraft caravans and J-Pod campers, Jayco Albury Wodonga is planning to display some of the oldest registered Jayco campers at the show, after running a competition to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Australia’s biggest RV manufacturer.

Also turning heads will be the new Dakar Extreme off-road model from Bellarine Caravans. Described by its Victorian manufacturer as the “most technically advanced off-road caravan that has ever been built in Australia for this price”, it’s fitted with Cruisemaster airbag suspension designed to lift it over all sorts of obstacles and also level the van automatically when parked.

The $100,000, 20ft Dakar caravan boasts a hefty 2888kg Tare thanks to almost 80 standard features, including a washing machine, 450W solar panels, gas heating, air-conditioning, and two fridges.

Not wanting to be outdone, Melbourne custom caravan builder Van Cruiser will be displaying Australia’s first caravan fitted with an on-board spa bath as well as its unique SUV toy hauler.

Bolwell RV will be returning to the show scene with revamped models, while Mars Campers is set to display its first compact off-road caravan.

Other highlights include Travelander’s new premium range of 'gas free' tray-back campers and camper trailers, while Stockman Products will exhibit its super-lightweight moulded Pod Trailer.

For something completely different, Jayco Albury Wodonga will also have the latest examples from Australia’s only motorcycle manufacturer Braaap, one of which tops the prize list in the Expo’s Passport to Freedom competition.

Other ‘side shows’ include the Tacklebusters Rod Train showing fishing videos on its massive LED screen, the Yamaha Supertank, and a venomous snakes presentation by Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia.

Admission to the Expo is $12 adults, $10 concession and it’s free for kids under 15 (accompanied by an adult), with a special two-day pass for $17 (concession $15).

Gates are open 9.30am to 5pm on Friday and Saturday, and 9.30am-4 pm on Sunday.
