Northern Territorians will be able to go camping and caravanning again this week-end, after the NT Government begins lifting coronavirus pandemic restrictions and re-opens some parks from midday May 1.
"Territorians will have the opportunity to safely spend this long weekend camping, swimming or walking through our parks and reserves – enjoying the great outdoors and the Territory lifestyle that we all love," said Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner.
"This is the first significant step we are taking to adjust coronavirus-related restrictions in a steady and staged process, to keep people safe.
The decision doesn't apply to Commonwealth-owned parks, or areas of parks affected by environmental and safety factors. There may also be caps on numbers and social distancing rules will still apply.
"We can take this action because we have made the Northern Territory the safest place in Australia – and we intend to keep it that way," the Chief Minister said.
"The NT has gone three weeks without a new positive case of COVID-19, and all but five cases are now fully recovered."
With gatherings of 10 people now allowed, West Australians will also able to camp in some local national parks, reserves and State forests, as well as some private caravan parks.
Most of the 268 campgrounds managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions are being re-opened as coronavirus restrictions begin to ease.
"Allowing Western Australians to camp in their local national parks and reserves is a positive step forward and a reflection of the good behaviour shown by the community during the State of Emergency," WA Environment Minister Stephen Dawson said.
"As people enjoy visiting and camping in their local national parks, I encourage them to be vigilant and to continue to practice social distancing," he added.
