The big Japanese off-roader has heaved itself into the Guinness Book of Records by breaking the record for “heaviest object pulled by any production vehicle” at the Sharjah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates.
The heavy object in question was a 170.9 tonne Russian Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane, some 15 tonnes heavier than the Boeing 747-200 which the previous record holder the Volkswagen Touareg R50 TDI lugged back in 2006. ??To put it in perspective, that’s more than 100 Jayco Expandas...
Despite its popularity in the Middle East, where petrol is relatively cheap, the more upmarket Patrol has struggled so far to find homes in Australia, mainly due to only being available with a powerful yet fuel-slurping 5.6-litre petrol V8 and the lack of a diesel alternative, an option that has proved popular with its venerable LandCruiser rival.
Year-to-date, Nissan had sold just 1598 Y61 and Y62 Patrols in Australia – 20 per cent less than in 2012 when only the older Y61 3.0-litre turbo-diesel Patrol was on sale.
By comparison, 5866 Toyota LandCruisers were sold over the same period.
