All 30 examples of the new Volkswagen California Beach Limited Edition camper van announced earlier this month have been snapped up within hours of online orders opening this week.
And Volkswagen Group Australia says its allocation of 30 Kombi van-inspired Multivan Cruise models – the only other ‘lifestyle’ version of the facelifted ‘T6.1’ Transporter to be available Down Under this year – is also selling rapidly online.
The California and Multivan specials bring a host of unique features to the Volkswagen T6.1 Transporter and will be the first new-look Transporter models to arrive in Australia, later than expected in November.
The arrival of full-time T6.1 Transporter-based California, Multivan and Caravelle models have also been pushed back, this time to 2021, by coronavirus-related production delays.
Australian customers who’ve placed orders for these vehicles have also been advised of the delay, and local pricing and specs for the full T.6.1 range will be announced in late July.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia director Ryan Davies said the California Beach special’s sell-out success demonstrates the effectiveness of the enhanced vehicle ordering system launched at Volkswagen Australia’s public website in March.
Since then, customers have been able to research, specify, receive a digital trade-in valuation on their existing vehicle, order and track the delivery of their new vehicle completely online from any device.
“It’s fitting that one of our most iconic heritage models ushers in a new way of selling our vehicles,” said Davies.
“In the world we live in, being able to offer customers new levels of flexibility feels like a natural step for the people’s car brand. Our online ordering and trade-in valuation is largely an Australian innovation, and it’s great to see it being embraced by our customers.”
The Multivan Cruise and Volkswagen California Beach are priced at $73,990 and $94,990 (plus ORCs) respectively.
Both vans are powered by the same EU6-complaint 110kW TDI340 four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with the more expensive California Beach adding 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
Both wear two-tone paint and add active safety features including lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alert.
But that’s about the end of the similarities between the special Multivan Cruise and California Beach, which sleeps four and has an electro-hydraulic pop-top roof – but there’s no kitchen as in Europe, making it more weekender than big-lapper.
Other standard features for the Volkswagen California Beach camper include interior blinds, a bed extension with comfort sleeping mat, camping table with two chairs, secondary battery, programmable parking heater, silver awning, power-latching tailgate and sliding doors on both sides.
The five-seat California also offers swiveling front seats, a reclining second-row bench, 17-inch alloy wheels, front/rear parking sensors, digital instrument panel and an 8.0-inch Discover Media infotainment touch-screen system with wireless App Connect, voice control, navigation and two USB ports.
Meantime, the short-wheelbase Multivan Cruise trumps all that by adding VW’s bigger, more advanced 9.2-inch Discover Media Pro infotainment unit, plus illuminated ‘Cruise’ scuff plates, Art Velour heated seats, electric tailgate, gloss-black B-pillars, 18-inch Teresina alloys, cornering fog lights, tinted windows and LED headlights, tail-lights and DRLs.
