New Trakmaster Explorer PT unveiled

Looking for a premium, locally-built couple's hybrid pop-top that's not too heavy and can fit inside the garage when you're not ticking off another Outback highway bucket list destination?

Well, Melbourne's Track has a new option available with the release of a powered pop-top version of its three-year old Trakmaster Explorer 14ft hybrid.

Unveiled at the 2026 National Outdoor Living & Caravan Expo in Melbourne, the new Explorer PT shares a lower-half with the Explorer hardtop, along with a similar fit-out including Tvan-style external kitchen, and cosy layout with north-south queen bed, lounge/dinette, rear kitchenette and combination shower/toilet.

The sturdy-looking pop-top roof boasts a 640mm lift powered by an actuator-driven scissor mechanism at each end, and takes a few seconds to raise or lower remotely.

Trakmaster says when storing the Explorer PT, a full height of under 2100mm is possible depending on options fitted. For example, fitting the optional airbag suspension and lowering the tyre pressures should allow owners to drop the height enough to squeeze into many suburban roller door garages.

The optional rooftop air conditioner raises the travel height to 2390mm.

The manufacturer says the Explorer PT's lower frontal profile delivers improved aerodynamics along with "rock solid towing stablity."

Other notable features include a tough, rivetted sheet metal nose cone with integrated storage access, along with a tunnel boot and additional storage locker on the offside.

You shouldn't have to stoop when entering the 'van, with Trakmaster designing "a folding full-height entry door with skirt break (that) delivers true stand-up access wherever you pull up".

The internal shower enclosure also features a clever slide-out design, incorporating clear hard barriers along the top section rather than a shower curtain to keep the water from splashing out.

A base weight of around 2060kg is similar to the Explorer HT's, with an ATM of 2850kg and ball weight at tare of 175kg.

Introductory pricing starts at $139,990, although you'll pay more than that for the 'all electric' off-grid power package that provides up to 1000kW roof mounted solar, 1500Ah lithium batteries and a 3000W inverter.

The 30 year-plus Trakmaster brand is now under its fourth owner in 10 years, with the latest Explorer pop-top and hardtop joining Track's other hardcore, Melbourne-built off-road models, the Tvan camper and T4 hybrid.
