New supersized caravan gets world-first auto balcony

Mega triple-axle, 12 berth Axiom fifth wheelers come packed with RV industry-first features

Australian caravan manufacturers build some pretty big, loaded-up house-style units, but they can't really compete with the new super-sized fifth-wheel caravans from American start-up Axiom RV.

The specs alone for the new triple axle Axiom 12-berth toy hauler and residential-style travel trailer are enough to make your eyes water: 47ft 2in (14.37m) long overall, 102in (2.6m) wide, 13ft 5in (4.09m) high, with a 12 tonne-plus (12,247kg) ATM or maximum loaded weight.

Then there's the number of 'world firsts', like a patent-pending rear-mount generator system that unlocks a giant tunnel boot with enough space for a cubby house, and a patent-pending mini-split HVAC system which includes separate air-con units in the bedroom, main living area and garage section.

They also come with dual external balconies including a 'first-of-its-kind' self-deploying side patio off the bedroom.

The layout is also next level; delivering an "open, residential feel" thanks to a class-leading 9ft 10in (3.0m) high ceiling, and 505sq.ft, or 47 square metres of floorspace, with enough room for 12 leather recliners and 12 sleeping spots in total, including two beds in the garage and a loft above the bathroom.

Room for everyone inside the Axiom fifth wheeler

Axiom is also claiming a number of firsts in the way it builds the new 'vans, including using in-house built aluminum-frame insulated body panels that are 72 per cent stronger than rivals', "making them the strongest sidewalls in the entire industry".

A new ClearSpan Roofing System also removes traditional joins and seals on the roof to reduce the chance of water leaks, while a new Curt Coil Pin Box coupling has an integrated shock-absorbing coil spring to reduce the impact of road vibrations on chassis and body components.

The Axiom fifth wheelers also get a patent pending AX Flex Ottoman, 1100W JBL Partybox bluetooth speaker and 65in LED HD TV, while options include a dishwasher and dinette and chairs in lieu of the 'super sofa'.

Axiom RV was founded by three American RV industry veterans and is getting ready to ramp up production at a factory in Elkhart, Indiana.

The Vendetta toy hauler gets a 14ft 6in (4.2m) deep garage, while the Imperium Residential model comes complete with four slide-outs, with a number of floorplans available.

The Axiom RV website isn't advertising pricing although it's been reported that the Imperium will start at around US$180,000.

Although the odd American-built caravan makes its way down under - and there are a few big American pick-ups here that could tow the Axiom - it's unlikely we'll ever see one on Australian soil, given the import and compliance costs and general lack of love for fifth wheelers in this country.
