With caravan theft seemingly on the rise in Australia, it’s no longer enough to slap a chain and padlock around your van and secure it to the nearest fencepost, to deter thieves.
While there are various hitch locks, wheel clamps, tracking systems, and alarms available to secure your pride and joy, until now little attention has been paid to safety chains. If not secured, it’s possible that thieves can use the safety chains to tow the caravan away, even if the hitch is denied by using a locking device.
However, to address this Melbourne-based Purple Line has released a new security device that locks both the safety chains and towing hitch, at the same time.
The Saracen Ultra hitch lock can be used to secure a caravan or trailer in three ways: securing the hitch to the tow vehicle when the trailer is hitched up to the tow vehicle; securing the hitch when the trailer is unhitched from tow vehicle, and securing the safety chains through the lock body when the trailer is unhitched.
The added feature of break-away chain security makes the $189 Saracen Ultra hitch lock “a multi-purpose hitch lock that ticks all of the boxes” according to Purple Line director Malcolm Hill.
“Used in conjunction with a wheel clamp, in order to immobilise the caravan too, a caravan owner will have peace of mind that they have taken the necessary precautions to protect against theft of their van.”
