New product: Kookabox

Aussie invention gives you camp cooking in a box

Remember the RooBox?

Revealed in early-2016, the unique, lightweight all-in-one portable camp kitchen was designed and built by a Sydney father in his garage as a present for his kids, but until recently it was just another ‘great Aussie invention’...

Now, after significant investment and further development, a more durable production version has hit the market, and will be displayed at this year’s Queensland Caravan Supershow (June 6-11).

Renamed the Kookabox, the portable camp kitchen measures 650mm by 340mm by 400mm high and instead of timber used in the original prototype, is now constructed from more sturdy aircraft grade aluminium with a stainless steel tubular frame.

Like the original, it packs everything you need for a day trip, picnic or overnighter, including saucepan and frypan, BBQ implements, condiment containers, a five litre water reservoir with water pump and a small ‘coolbox’ that will keep food cold for up to 10 hours.

Also included are enough dinner plates, stainless steel cutlery, coffee mugs and drinking cups for four people, and there’s a separate drawer for sauces and cooking oils.

The whole unit weighs 16kg without the single burner gas cooker, which isn’t included in the RRP of $1099.

The Australian distributors of the Kookabox, Landmark Outdoor Leisure, said the unit conforms to the latest AGA (gas) regulations and the design is protected by a patent covering 150 countries.

The first shipment of Kookabox mini-kitchens arrives in Australia next month, and the distributors are currently taking pre-order payments on the compact units, which are aimed at anyone “who wants to enjoy a barbeque in the park, cliff top, by the river, on the beach or on the balcony of an apartment”.

As well as outdoors enthusiasts including RV and 4x4 travellers and boaties, the Kookabox has also been attracting interest from tradies and owner drivers looking for an on-the-move cooking solution.
