If you’ve ever been annoyed by the clunking, tugging, or porpoising that a laden trailer transmits to your tow car on poor backroads, the new 3500kg-rated Gen-Y (pronounced ‘Jenny’), rubber torsion hitch could be the solution.
Claimed to eliminate 90 per cent of the inertia between your tow car and your caravan or trailer, the newcomer is a companion to the larger, heavier and more expensive 7000kg-rated Gen-Y that has been available on the local market for the past three years.
Weighing in at 12kg, compared to the monster 27kg of its big brother, the smaller Gen-Y torsion hitch requires a minimum ball weight of 90kg and a maximum of 300kg to function optimally, which covers most caravans and trailers likely to be towed by 3500kg-rated local tow vehicles.
It has been tested and certified to Australian Standards, passed for ADRs by Truck Engineering Australia in Brisbane and is covered by a 10-year local warranty.
Priced in basic form from $990, the new hitch can be tailored to suit any vehicle from Unimogs to low-riding family sedans, either via its multi-holed tongue, or via drop-hitches offering in three to eight-slot configurations.
Like its big brother, the 3.5t torsion hitch employs high tensile rubber to absorb the towing forces generated between tow vehicle and trailer, limiting the tendency to push the rear of the tow vehicle down on bumps, taking weight off its steer tyres and potentially making it susceptible to side winds.
It also reduces road rumble and in most applications it makes the use of a Weight Distribution Hitch unnecessary, which makes it particularly suitable for off-road use.
