Premium hard-shell roof-top tents have been all the rage in recent times, and one of the latest to hit the market is the new range-topping Saber model from 23Zero.
Displayed at the 2021 Victorian Caravan Supershow on top of a RAM 1500, the new 23Zero Saber roof tent looks like a good option for quick set-ups and comfy overnight stops when bush camping, with its strut-assisted, rear-opening lid and relatively user-friendly telescopic ladder access to the double bed.
With two flexible supports in place to hold up the rear 'awning' for some additional rain and sun protection, the Saber roof tent comes standard with a 2.2m x 1.31m, 50mm thick rebound foam mattress with 20mm anti-condensation mat, with the option of a 100mm Australian-made inner spring mattress.
The 280gsm polycotton rip-stop canvas tent features a black 'LST' interior coating to help block out the morning sun, or glaring lights from nearby campers, with three screened entry and exit points allowing an optional side or 270 degree awning to be fitted.
Construction wise, 23Zero says the Saber roof-top tent boasts a powdercoated 25mm thick aluminium honeycomb base and thermally insulated aluminium tubular frame with powdercoated aluminium top, water and dust-proof rubber seals and stainless steel hinges.
Other features include three detachable roof bars with brackets for carrying extra gear, two adjustable safety locks and two zippered power-cord entry points, along with two built-in storage pockets and six removable pockets, while there's enough room inside with the standard mattress to store sleeping bags, doonas and blankets in transit.
In travel mode, the Saber tent measures 2.3m long by 1.41m wide by 20cm high. Total weight with the ladder and roof bars is 97kg, with the innerspring version weighing 108kg.
Advertised pricing at the Supershow was $3499 for the standard version, and $3999 with the inner-spring mattress.
