New Outlaw fills another niche
Victoria’s Van Cruiser says you can have it all with latest compact off-roaderHaving shaken up the hard-walled camper trailer market two years ago with its compact SUV toy hauler, Melbourne’s ever-inventive Van Cruiser has filled another market niche with a full-height 13ft 8in off-roader complete with a full separate shower, toilet and washing machine-equipped ensuite priced from $54,990.
The Outlaw SUV HTO, to give it its complete title is a full height version of the existing Outlaw SUV, but with extra storage thanks to its overhead cupboards, and a Daewoo Mini 2kg washing machine incorporated on the offside wall adjacent to its Dometic cassette toilet, central vanity and full-size fibreglass shower pod.
Van Cruiser has managed to fit all this into a van with an internal length of less than 4.2 metres by placing the innerspring double bed transversely across the nose, above a full tunnel boot, with an L-shaped lounge and compact cooktop-sink module with a 140-litre Waeco Coolmatic compressor below in the middle.
A second, slide-out stainless steel three-burner kitchen slides out from the door side, while up front on its A-frame buyers can specify a range of customised tool boxes that can include a fridge and/or generator slide and woodbox.
As with Van Cruiser’s other Outlaw models, the HTO sits on a 100mm G&S galvanised chassis with a 75mm riser and a 150mm A-frame.
Standard suspension on the entry level ‘Dirt Road’ HTO is single-axle rocker leaf spring with single shock absorbers with a 50mm ball hitch, while if you tick the ‘Off-Road’ option, you get Control Rider TS independent suspension with heavy duty coil springs and dual shock absorbers per wheel and a DO-35 off-road hitch.
Twin 95-litre fresh water tanks, twin 100AH deep cycle batteries, 2 x 120W roof-mounted solar panels, an Air Command Sparrow reverse cycle air conditioner, Winegard HD TV antenna, a reversing camera and 245 x 16 off-road tyres on Primal alloy wheels, are part of its base specs.
Also new from Van Cruiser for 2017 is a larger SUV HTO full-height 15ft 5in van with a front corner north-south bed, a combined shower-toilet ensuite, a large twin-drawer 144-litre stainless steel Vitrifrigo fridge-freezer and additional drawer storage for $58,990.
Both vans are 2100mm wide, meaning they will follow in the wheel tracks of most large 4WDs.
