New glamping options at Katherine park

Enjoy a night under canvas in one of Australia's priciest tents at a four-star holiday park in the Northern Territory

Most people would balk at spending $25,000 on a camper trailer, let alone a two-berth tent. But that hasn’t stopped a four-star rated caravan park in the Northern Territory town of Katherine from doing just that.

BIG4 Katherine Holiday Park recently added two permanent safari tents to its range of accommodation options, complete with large timber decks and massive fly roofs, at a total cost of $50,000.

Looking a bit like over-sized versions of the legendary OzTent, the safari tents follow the recent trend started by the likes of Sydney’s Lane Cove Tourist Park in providing glamping (glamorous camping) options to travelers.

Located near the park’s swimming pool and brand new camp kitchen, each tent comes complete with a queen bed, fridge freezer, table and chairs and all linen is provided.

According to park owner Jeff Smith, the safari tents are perfect for those who want to spend the night in a canvas hideaway listening to the peaceful sounds of the Katherine bush, while avoiding the bother of setting up their own tent.

He believes they will be a big drawcard for tourists wanting a taste of the real Aussie outback, and offer couples something a bit different.

“We’re really looking forward to helping guests experience a traditional camping holiday, without sacrificing comfort,” he said. “We live in a beautiful part of Australia and we’re happy to be able to share it with our guests in such a unique way.”

The permanent tents join a number of accommodation options available on the 18 hectare property, located 5km west of Katherine off the Victoria Hwy. Depending on the season, rates range from around $37 for an unpowered site to $170 or more for a family-sized ensuite cabin.

Amongst its other attractions, the BIG4 park claims to be a haven for bird watchers, and offers tours to nearby Nitmiluk Gorge and Edith Falls.
