New gear: Flat-jack caravan leveller

Portable, inflatable campsite levelling aid is a cheaper alternative to airbag suspension

Queensland’s AOR is the new Australian distributor for a clever, compact ‘tyre pillow’ designed to make it easier and cheaper to level your RV on uneven camp sites.

The flat-jack 2.0 inflatable levelling aid hails from Europe and is suitable for motorhomes, caravans and camper trailers weighing up to 6000kg.

“An innovative new product to hit the market, the German engineered flat-jack is designed to assist in levelling your trailer when parking,” AOR said on social media.

“Do away with your ramps and airbag system; the flat-jack is a simple and compact product that can easily be stored in your spare wheel cover bin section.”

To use it, the caravan’s tyre is backed up over the uninflated flat-jack placed flat on the ground behind it, before it’s inflated with either a hand pump or 12V pump to the right height.

The flat-jack 2.0 is designed for tyre widths up to 305mm, and AOR says it can be inflated to 22psi, and raise the tyre by up to 200mm – more than the 50-70mm required for most uneven campsites.

AOR says the flat-jack 2.0 will be available for sale soon at the AOR Store, priced at $289 each, with owners of tandem axle caravans needing to purchase two (one for each wheel).

The Queensland off-road camper specialist said to deal with any concerns about safety issues when using the flat-jack it plans to “do a full informational video with set-up in the next few weeks”. It also recommends dropping the caravan stabilisers and putting a wheel chock on the opposing wheel to provide stability when using the product.

According to the maker of the flat-jack 2.0, the product can also be used to prevent tyre ‘flat spots’, and the company recommends putting some padding like a car mat under the flat-jack when it’s being used on rough ground, to prevent punctures.
