New 'baby' Vista RV coming soon

Premium off-road manufacturer is taking on the top-end canvas campers with a new, compact Crossover van aimed at hardcore adventurers

Melbourne's Vista RV is planning to add a shorter, more affordable version of its premium offroad 'hybrid' camper to its range by the end of the year.

Although still in the design stages and with final specifications yet to be announced, Vista RV's Louie Cretella said the new "baby Crossover" model would be a shortened version of the existing Vista RV Crossover (pictured), minus the indoor kitchen at the rear.

He expected it to appeal to off-road enthusiasts who want the rugged design and caravan comforts of the original Crossover but without the internal fridge, sink and extra bench space.

The "cute" compact van will retain most of the features of its bigger brother although the slide-out external kitchen will be smaller. It's likely to cost around $45,000, whereas the Vista RV Crossover currently retails from $53,890.

"You’ll still be able to open the door, walk in it, stand up in it, pop the top in it, and you'll still have the queen size bed, little lounge, pop up table..." Cretella explained.

The compact model will be about 150-200kg lighter than the full-sized Crossover, which has an 1100kg Tare, but have a slightly heavier ball weight of about 140kg.

Cretella is hoping the baby Crossover will attract new, more budget-conscious buyers to the five-year-old Vista RV brand.

"(We’re targeting the) high end flip-over campers," he said. "We want to stand alongside them and say, 'Well, do you want canvas or don't you, and I think 90 per cent of buyers will say no they don’t," he said.

Cretella said that buyers can also expect more updates to the existing Crossover to roll out this year, including revised front and rear roof sections that will provide more headroom for very tall people with the pop-top roof up.

Vista RV manufactures most of the components for its innovative, state-of-the-art campers at its purpose-built factory in the Melbourne suburb of Bayswater. The factory is currently running close to capacity, producing around 50 campers a year, with plans to increase production when the new model comes on line.
