New Age powers up Wayfinder camper

New electric roof system takes strain out of setting up Melbourne-built camper trailers

Melbourne's New Age has given its Wayfinder pop-up camper trailer a major update for 2022, including fitting a new power-operated roof mechanism that takes the strain out of setting up and packing down the canvas-walled camper.

The new 12V electric roof lift system was developed in conjunction with NSW-based Jacka Industries, and replaces the previous manual-winding winch and cable system with four roof actuators in each corner, that operate independently to raise the roof in around two minutes, via a touchscreen controller located in the front boot.

It takes about the same time – two minutes – to lower the roof using the hands-free operation.

The new one-touch electric roof is a point of difference with other wind-up campers from rival manufacturers including Jayco and Goldstream, although Avan does offer an electric roof system option on its Golf slide-out camper trailers.

Starting prices for both 2022-model Wayfinder variants have risen accordingly by around $3000, with the entry-level 13ft couples' camper now starting at $30,990, and the 12ft family version priced from $34,990.

The 2022 Wayfinder models have also been freshened up with new external decals and improved internal cabinetry including new kicker panels and a new surround for the larger 23L microwave. There are also thicker dinette seat cushions, an updated 12V/240V ‘plug ‘n play’ wiring and CMS system, new LED lights and a fresh alloy wheel design.

New Age has also made some improvements to the Wayfinder's two-part entry door, making it easier to set up and secure in place when the roof is raised.

2022 Wayfinder features

The latest entry-level Wayfinder Comfort models come standard with a Walkinshaw galvanized chassis, Raptor exterior protection, 50mm ball hitch, 15in wheels and leaf spring suspension, along with a single 9kg gas bottle, 80L water tank, sink/stove combo cooktop, 93L three-way fridge, and a 100Ah AGM battery and BMPRO management system.

Buyers can choose an optional ‘Comfort Plus’ pack which adds BMPRO SwayControl, 150W rooftop solar panel, 24in Smart TV/DVD, microwave and external picnic table, plus an additional 80L water tank and 9kg gas bottle.

There's also an Adventurer Pack option that adds items like Cruisemaster independent coil suspension, 16in alloys and all-terrain tyres, while the top-spec 'Adventurer Plus' option also includes an external shower, Transfloor X flooring underlay and box awning, among other features.

A gas hot water unit and under-bed air-conditioner are among other options available.

New Age’s General Manager – Sales and Marketing, Darren Swenson, said the new Wayfinder electric roof system was developed in-house over 12 months including real-world prototype testing, with the first production models expected to roll out of New Age’s Epping, Victoria factory before the end of this year.
