New Age Caravans has lifted the lid on its all-new camper trailer at this year’s NSW Caravan, Camping & Holiday Supershow.
While the new Wayfinder camper is similar in a lot of ways to New Age’s first Road Tripper wind-out camper, revealed around 18 months ago, the big-selling Melbourne caravan manufacturer says the latest model is “an all-new ground up design” with significant development and testing by major New Age stakeholder and automotive specialist Walkinshaw.
“The Wayfinder is an all new ground up design from the Walkinshaw designed chassis to the roof lifter system,” New Age Caravans’ Head of Strategy & Execution, Oliver Lukeis, told Caravancampingsales.
He said the Wayfinder, which will be available initially in either a 12ft four-berth layout with a slide-out 1500m wide bed at each end or 13ft two-berth option with fixed double bed and no slide-outs, features a lot of new design technologies that focus on easy operation and quick set-up.
“One example is the bed slider system which has been designed on a uniquely designed roller system utilizing unique side roller extrusions and a sandwich panel base,” explained Lukeis.
“Similar is the roof, which has also been designed with a sandwich panel roof surface mated to aluminum extrusion outer structure with built in curtain and canvas tracks.
“The roof lifter system has a unique ratio winch utilizing a cable and pulley system (and) has undergone extensive validation testing completing over 700 up and down tests overloaded with 150kg of extra weigh on the roof. The winch has completed 98,000 revolutions during the testing phase,” he said.
He said the Walkinshaw team was also involved in the exterior design including the tail-lights as well as the roof.
Tare weights should be around the 1370-1590kg range for mid to top-spec variants, with prices starting at $28,990 for the two-berth Wayfinder and $32,990 for the family version.
Featuring a galvanized chassis and Alucabond cladding, all Wayfinder campers also come standard with at least one lounge/dinette, 50mm ball hitch, leaf spring suspension, 9kg gas bottle, 80L water tank, sink/stove combo cooktop, 93L three-way fridge, foam mattress, ‘military grade’ canvas and a battery management system.
For an additional $4000, buyers can opt for a ‘Comfort’ package that includes Raptor exterior coating, 100Ah AGM battery, microwave, audio system, and 24in Smart TV and antenna. Add another $6000 on top of that for the ‘Adventurer’ package, which also includes a DO35 hitch, gas bayonet and hose, external speakers, picnic table, recessed coupling, 150W solar system including regulator, double manual step, AL-KO Enduro Outback suspension, 16in black Karmistic wheels and tyres, waterproof liner under floor, box awning, AL-KO ESC, an A-frame mains pressure tap, and a handle light.
Wayfinder buyers can also pay extra for other options like a hot water system, air-con and an external shower.
New Age says it will consider introducing other Wayfinder layouts if there’s sufficient customer demand.
