The Walkinshaw Automotive Group, which locally builds New Age caravans along with right-hand-drive converted American pick-ups, is offering to manufacture emergency medical equipment during the coronavirus crisis.
Walkinshaw is proposing equipment like hospital respirators could be made with 3D printers currently used to make high-strength plastic prototoype components for caravans and camper trailers as well as re-manufactured American pickups like the RAM 1500 and 2500 and Chevrolet Silverado for the Australian market.
“To help emergency departments treat patients affected by COVID-19, we have raised our hand to help both Federal and Victorian governments to design, engineer and assemble any emergency medical equipment that be made with a 3D printer,” Walkinshaw Automotive Group owner Ryan Walkinshaw told an Australian auto website.
“We would need the blueprints to the design of these ventilators, but we can help once we have the right information,” Walkinshaw said.
Last year Walkinshaw completed final assembly on more than 6000 imported Holden, Chevrolet and RAM pick-ups and sports cars, and built more than 2000 New Age caravans, camper trailers and pop-tops at its two Melbourne facilities in Clayton and Epping. The company employs around 800 staff including 100 engineers and gained full ownership of New Age Caravans in late-2018.
