More South African campers stampede Down Under

From the African savanna to the Australian bush, Imagine Campers add to burgeoning camper trailer market

Conqueror Australia's range of Urban Escape Vehicles weren't the only new arrivals with a South African accent at this year's National 4x4 & Outdoors Show at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Another foreign brand after a slice of the growing camper trailer market was Imagine Campers with its ComfortVan.

"Imagine Campers have been available since June in Australia and the company has been going for 16 years in South Africa," explained Imagine Campers' Ernie Anfield.

"We've got the two models now available in Australia, the biggest difference is that one has got the bathroom and shower and space for a portable toilet. Both of these units are available in either two sleeper, three or four sleeper configurations, and they're fairly light, with the smaller unit weighing only 860kg. The other unit is 1020kg. The upper body is fibreglass, with a fully galvanised chassis."

Despite compact dimensions (4840mm long x 1850mm wide) the ComfortVan manages to pack in a lot of features for its size, said Anfield, with the interior bathroom/shower and toilet "especially appealing to the ladies".

Anfield says that set-up time is quick -- about three minutes to pop the roof, slide out the sleeping areas and open the external kitchen. "If you want to put up the annexe, all up it takes about 10 minutes," he said.

Space utilisation is excellent too, for a compact camper. "Even in the front there’s a 360 litre toolbox, which is big enough to fit your annexes and four chairs in there. So when you’re touring, you’ve got enough storage space, and there should be nothing lying on the floor if you want to stop off for an overnight stop," he said.

Anfield says the campers' off-road capabilities are "really good", with recent excursions to South African national parks. Dust sealing was a priority, with double rubber seals and double lock mechanisms to keep the dust out.

The ComfortVans are delivered from South Africa fully ADR complaint, and delivery waiting periods are currently around 14 weeks.

Pricing starts at $46,700, with a choice of fridge/freezer one of only few options available.
