After a nice run of caravan shows earlier this year, which saw tens of thousands of show-goers enjoy big events in Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland from around April to June, the show season seems to be grinding to a premature halt.
Faced with on-going, nationwide lockdowns, organisers have recently been forced to cancel a number of popular shows, including annual events in the Victorian town of Bendigo and on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Caravanning Queensland recently cancelled its 2021 Let’s Go Sunshine Coast Caravan & Outdoor Expo which was scheduled for August 20-22, while Caravan Industry Victoria has also called off the 2021 Border Caravan & Camping Expo at Wodonga Racecourse, due to run on the same dates.
Another popular outdoor adventure show scheduled for late-August, the National 4x4 and Outdoor Show in Melbourne, has been pushed back to November 26-28, while the organisers of this year's Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show at Western Sydney International Dragway have decided to re-schedule the show for March 4-6, 2022.
Early this year the CIV managed to successfully run the Victorian Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow by pushing it back to a later date in May and a different location, while some smaller shows like the Toowoomba Outdoor Adventure & Motoring Expo have run recently, in between lockdowns.
"As a result of the current COVID-19 outbreak and the lockdown restrictions currently in place for parts of South-East Queensland, we have made the decision to cancel the upcoming Let’s Go Sunshine Coast Caravan & Outdoor Expo," Caravanning Queensland announced on its website last last week.
"We are very disappointed to have to cancel this event for the second year in a row, however we feel this is the most prudent course of action at this point in time. The health and safety of our members, staff, exhibitors and stakeholders is paramount and it would be irresponsible of us to place people at risk. We hope to be back bigger than ever in 2022."
Caravanning Queensland held the inaugural Sunshine Coast Caravan and Outdoor Expo at the Nambour Showgrounds in 2019, but it hasn't run since due to COVID restrictions.
Caravanning Queensland still hopes to run the 2021 Let’s Go Brisbane Caravan & Outdoor Sale at the Brisbane Showgrounds from Oct 28-31, while the CIV is also planning to hold the Melbourne Leisurefest at Sandown Racecourse from October 7-10 and the Bendigo Leisurefest at Bendigo Racecourse from November 19-21.
It's been a tough time for show organisers over the past 18 months, with many caravan shows also postponed or cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, and some replaced by an online format.
