According to the results of a recent survey conducted by Caravancampingsales, there are five general buyer ‘types’ when it comes to those in the market for a recreational vehicle: people that are new to the market or seeking a second or ‘retirement’ purchase, as well as experienced or ‘returning’ caravanners or those who are ‘just looking’. Of the 2138 people that completed the survey late last year, more than a third (35 per cent) can be described as ‘New to Market’: typically younger people who don’t currently own an RV and so rely instead on tents and accessories when they go camping. These ‘newbies’ are often on tight budgets and are most likely to buy a cheaper, possibly imported camper trailer.
Those in the ‘Second Purchase’ category (16 per cent of respondents) are also usually of a younger generation who already own a camper trailer, and are either looking to buy another one or upgrade to a caravan.
They’re also likely to own a boat and a 4x4 or SUV for towing, and usually go away for at least four weeks each year, which is about average.
‘Returning Caravanners’ (accounting for 16 per cent) are generally a bit older, already own a more expensive caravan and use it fairly regularly, often in caravan parks.
These more experienced ‘vanners are mostly aged between 45 and 65 and often travel with families. They're also more likely than not members of tourist park chains.
About one in five (21 per cent) are those looking for the ‘Retirement RV’. These are people either in or approaching retirement and are most likely to be thinking about a motorhome.
However, they’re not necessarily experienced, with around a third new to the RV market. These ‘retirees’ generally have the most RV money to spend; about $42,000 on average in the case of the survey takers.
Then there those ‘Just Looking’, which make up the smallest group of potential buyers at just 12 per cent. These ‘tyre kickers’ most likely own a caravan or camper but are not currently in the market to replace it, although they might be looking to sell.
Instead, they’re most likely researching their next, big trip, or checking out the latest accessories and types of RVs that best suit their travel plans. They’re average RV spend is a measly $16,000.
