Fancy owning an old-school Kombi camper but with the fuel economy, reliability and features of a modern-day motorhome?
Retro RV could have the answer, with the fledgling NSW-based business offering fully rebuilt classic Volkswagen Kombis with modern-day mechanicals and a spacious two or four-berth motorhome body conversion.
Retro RV is run by qualified automotive technician and Volkswagen Kombi restorer, Phil Hoken who, according to the Retro RV website, "always dreamed of building motorhomes out of Kombi vans so when COVID-19 hit he figured that now would be the perfect time to launch Retro RV as Aussies are restricted to travelling within Australia and there isn’t a more desirable and iconic vehicle to explore Australia in than a VW Kombi RV".
The unique motorhomes use mostly tired old 1970s Volkswagen vans as a base, with Retro RV overhauling the mechanicals before adding a Luton peak-style four-berth or smaller two-berth motorhome body, with a slide-out version also available (Check out the video video to see how they're built).
The original VW engines are swapped out for more modern, fuel injected, overhead cam Subaru EJ20 engines "which makes each Retro RV reliable with great fuel economy," according to the company.
Retro RV also adds other new parts including brakes, clutch, radiator, tyres, steering and suspension components, for improved drivability.
The motorhome body utilises a steel and aluminium frame and 25mm insulated aluminium composite panels, all designed to deliver the "old school look with the latest technology".
The two-berth interior layout features an east-west double bed at the rear, bench seating with fold-down dining table and L-shape kitchenette, with typical motorhome fixtures fitted including a single house battery with optional portable solar panel, 12V water pump, 20 litre fresh and 20 litre grey water tanks, upright compressor fridge/freezer, 12V LED lighting, air-conditioner and storage drawers and cupboards.
Externally, the retro motorhomes also get a side entry door, 'sail track' awning, roof vent, awning light and rear storage compartments.
'Turn key' Retro RV motorhomes are available from $99,000 for the two-berth models, and from $149,000 for the four-berth.
Retro RV is also offering a rental business franchise model, with 19 franchises already sold based in Queensland, ACT, Victoria, Western Australia and NSW.
