As far as April Fool's Day jokes go, it's not a bad one: a MINI hooked up to a teardrop caravan, in matching motorsport colours and available from a BMW dealership near you. If nothing else it proves the point you don't necessarily need a big off-road SUV to enjoy a spot of camping fun.
According to the tongue-in-cheek press blurb released by MINI UK on April 1, the "sumptuously appointed caravan with two sleeping bays and a roof-top tent (also designed for two) in the classic John Cooper Works colour scheme will whet the appetite for do-it-yourself summer holidays peppered with spur-of-the-moment detours along the way".
Hooked up to a high-riding Mini Countryman, the two-berth 'Cowley' caravan features "everything you need to pitch camp in comfort", including twin-burner gas-stove, a water tank with pump and dish-washing facility, a solar module to charge the on-board battery and 230-volt power connection to supply the fridge, TV/DVD and audio system.
MINI reckons the "the eye-catching trailer is only 12cm wider than a Mini Clubman mirror to mirror and weighs just under 300kg" so the little hatch shouldn't have too much trouble hauling it up hills.
Meanwhile, the 'Swindon' roof-top tent is fitted easily to the hatchback's roof, and also comes resplendent in John Cooper Works colours.
"Having found a fittingly dreamy place to catch a stylish night’s shut-eye, it’s just a case of climbing up onto the roof of the Mini, lifting up the upper half of the roof-top tent box and plumping your pillows ready for impact," is the claim that's unlikely to ever be proven.
"The roof-top tent works a treat, whether the location for your beauty sleep is the English shires or the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Indeed, should you have chosen one of nature’s livelier spots to spend the night, the elevated sleeping position will keep passers-by from the animal world at arm’s length."
Not surprisingly, no word yet on pricing or availability in Australia -- or any part of the world come to that. Perhaps MINI owners will be suitably inspired to create their own racey red campers...
Or alternatively you could buy one of the locally-manufactured teardrop campers from A'van available in a range of vibrant colours (also pictured).
