Melbourne custom builder goes feral!

Trailblazers unleashes its all-terrain Combat Wombat hybrid teardrop camper at the Queensland Supershow

The explosion of caravans and camper trailers on the Australian market has led to a legion of lexicons of catchy names to distinguish them from their rivals.

But the caravancampingsales' vote for the quirkiest new moniker goes by a country kilometre to Trailblazers RV’s new hybrid teardrop camper model, the Combat Wombat which is making its show debut at the 2022 Let's Go Queensland Caravan and Camping Supershow, on at the Brisbane Showgrounds from June 7-12.

Built in-house in Keysborough, Melbourne, the ‘Wombat’ is basically a hard-roofed version of Trailblazers’ similar pop-top.

Designed specially for extreme off-grid adventures, the Wombat’s single axle coil spring suspension and monster 37-inch tyres mounted on 16 x 7.5inch rims, will take Queensland’s Bruder extreme off-road models head on, particularly at its competitive $79,900 price.

Combat Wombat is another unique RV thought up by Trailblazers’ boss Phil Richardson

With its low profile and massive ground clearance  the only thing the fixed roof Combat Wombat really lacks is interior headroom, with occupants needing to crawl into the north-south queen bed that takes up most of its space.

Cooking and showering is done outdoors, with the kitchen and pantry which form its nose-cone, sliding out (with the help of a drop-down wheeled stabiliser) to the door side from behind a pair of A-frame mounted 4kg gas bottles and a single jerrycan holder.

Slide-out kitchen is one of the biggest in the business

The kitchen comprises a Thetford two burner cooktop and grill, adjacent to a single stainless steel sink that's covered by a glass lid when not in use. 100 litres of fresh water storage is provided.

The portable cassette toilet lives inside under a removable seat at the foot of the bed, but can be relocated into the drop-down shower tent on the Wombat’s right hand side for longer-term camping.

Power off the grid comes from a 200AH lithium battery, fed by two 200W rooftop solar panels, with power handled by a Projecta system.

Watch TV on the loo!

Other Combat Wombat standard features include an external steel roll-over cage with front and rear rooftop light bars and sand tracks, while a large awning covers the entire door side when extended, including the  kitchen.

While there’s an external pantry locker, occupants will still need to travel fairly light despite extra storage under the bed.

Headroom is tight with fixed roof

There’s no air conditioning, with the job of keeping occupants cool on tropical nights left to two long side and one rear opening slit windows, a large rooftop hatch and a pair of 12v Sirocco fans.

Weighing in at an impressively light Tare of 1150kg and with a GVM of 2800kg, the Combat Wombat should be able to barge its way through the bush to wherever its 4WD tow vehicle will venture, but like all Trailblazers products, it can be further customised to meet individual owners' requirements.

Tough suspension for off-road adventures

The Combat Wombat isn't the only eye-catching camper on the Trailblazers' stand at the 2022 Queensland Supershow, with the Melbourne custom builder also showcasing one of the most expensive caravans on display at the Brisbane Showgrounds, with its latest 3500kg ATM rated fifth wheeler caravan also making its way up from Melbourne for the show.

Optioned-up Trailblazers fifth wheeler could be yours for $210,000

Fitted with Cruisemaster's ATX airbag suspension along with a 450Ah lithium battery set-up including six 175W rooftop solar panels, the 20th Anniversary Special Edition 260 Off-Road fifth-wheeler comes loaded up with luxuries including a rear club lounge, twin fridges, ducted heating and a master bedroom with ensuite, for its show price of $210,000.
