Big-selling Queensland camper importer MDC has hopped on the hardcore, stubby tent trailer bandwagon with a new Mod Box model that starts from just $12,990.
Similar in concept to the premium Australian-built Patriot X1 and AOR Sierra ZR, although closer in specification and pricing to the NSW-built Drifter DOT trailer as well as other cut-price imported models like the Stoney Creek Nugget, the new Chinese-built MDC Mod Box is aimed at off-road adventurers who want something compact to drag through the mud, or just something light enough to haul behind a light or medium-duty tow vehicle.
At less than two metres wide and just over three metres long, and with a sub-800kg Tare and up to 1600kg ATM, the MDC Mod Box is one of the lighter off-road campers on the market.
It features a galvanised chassis, with powdercoated aluminium body panels, independent trailing arm suspension, 10in electric brakes, and 16in black alloys with mud tyres also part of the standard off-road package.
To keep the price down, the Mod Box is fitted as standard with a polyblock coupling and manual pump tap, although for $12,900 there's a good starter camping kit including roof-racks, 85 litre water tank, gas bottle holder, 100Ah battery with Projecta charger, fold-out awning and 12V/USB points.
Mounted to the adjustable roof rack mounts, the James Baroud-style pop-up roof tent costs an additional $1000 and sleeps two people on a 1100m x 2080mm foam mattress.
Gear is stored in a number of enclosed, external storage areas including two side lockers, a rear locker with two fridge/generator slides and a front toolbox.
The Mod Box camper is the second cut-price Patriot 'lookalike' released by MDC recently, following the introduction of the Patriot toy hauler camper-style MDC XH7.4 Xpedition Hauler last year.
The first Mod Box campers are expected to arrive in MDC dealerships by mid-May.
