MDC slashes hybrid pop-top pricing

New Chinese-built 12ft hybrid undercuts original Aussie version by $30,000

How much cheaper is it to build a caravan in China than Australia?

A lot cheaper, if you compare the pricing of the almost identical Chinese-built version of MDC’s Titan 12ft hybrid pop-top to the Brisbane-built model that was offered by MDC under its fledgling AusRV ‘homegrown’ brand around two years ago.

Displayed on the MDC stand at the 2020 Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow, the latest Chinese-built AusRV Titan 12 off-road pop-top camper was advertised at $49,990 – or $30,000 less than the locally-built version was selling for in 2018.

While there were a few noticeable changes, like a sleeker slide-out kitchen, different interior furniture and the use of MDC’s own off-road suspension instead of the pricier Cruisemaster XT set-up, the Chinese built Titan 12 features similar fibreglass sandwich body panels and 150mm x 50mm galvanised chassis to the original Aussie version, along with a cosy interior layout incorporating an east-west double bed, bench lounge/dinette and rear benchtop and cabinetry.

The new Chinese model also retains the hard-lid, drop-down shower tent at the rear, along with a drawbar fitted with a large toolbox and gas bottle and jerry holders, Cruisemaster D0-35 coupling and fold-up jockey wheel.

The external kitchen features a three burner gas cooker, sink with mixer tap and BBQ extension, with two pull-out pantry drawers in a locker alongside.

Overall dimensions and weights have changed slightly – the imported Titan 12 measures 6.4m long and 2.0m wide in travel mode, and has a Tare weight of around 1605kg and ATM of 2800kg.

A Thetford 90 litre compressor fridge, audio unit with internal/external Fusion speakers and innerspring mattress are also located inside, with other standard equipment including a Truma hot water unit, roll-out awning, two 9kg gas bottles, electric entry step, Winegard TV antenna, 12in electric drum brakes and 16in alloys with 265/75 Goodride mud tyres.

The 2020-model AusRV Titan also comes with two 100Ah AGM batteries and a 200W solar panel, battery management system and 1000W inverter, while grey Raptor spray protection along the sides and front helping prevent damage to the glossy white exterior walls when travelling off-road.
