In Europe, it’s not uncommon for rich types to order super-sized, A-class motorhomes with side ‘lockers’ for carrying their exotic sports cars.
But Victorian Greg McCann has just bought a custom-built motorhome that carries precious cargo of another, high horsepower variety.
The veteran show jumping horse trainer is the proud new owner of a New Zealand-built motorhome and horse carrier powered by a Scania P 440 6x2 rigid truck.
The latest Wade Equine Coach Platinum Series motorhome was constructed and complianced for Australian use by the Hamilton-based Wade Group, which specialises in top-end horse haulers.
It incorporates a smart and spacious living area for McCann and his wife, including Luton Peak double bed and slide-out lounge, with the possibility of sleeping two further grooms, riders or helpers in single fold-out beds.
The van also has Wi-Fi and a small kitchenette. But it’s the state-of-the-art rear accommodation for McCann’s precious ponies, which weigh around 500kg each and are originally from Holland that really impresses.
The fancy horse accommodation has been finished using stainless rather than galvanised steel and there’s a split air conditioner for keeping everyone cool and calm on the road. There’s even an electric awning to keep the horse compartment cooler in sunny weather.
“These are very valuable horses so I want to be sure they are travelling in a secure environment,” he said.
“(With) automated transmission and airbag suspension, the horses will get a good ride and also important is the fact that we can bleed the air out of the rear suspension system so the access ramp angle is lower, putting less strain on the horses as they enter and leave the box.”
The new truck, believed to have cost as much as $600,000, can accommodate up to five horses, though his complement is usually only three or four animals.
