The ‘plastic’ pod trailer market is already well served by Melbourne-based Stockman Products, but now there’s a cheaper, more basic alternative for those wanting a small, lightweight enclosed trailer for hauling camping gear or other items you can't fit in the car. A Sydney-based company has just released the Spectrum Lite luggage trailer, which is built using an imported, polyethylene body mounted to an Australian-built galvanised chassis.
Priced from $2199 (excluding GST), the Spectrum trailer is around half the price of the
entry-level Stockman Pod, which starts at $3995. However, you do pay extra for items that are standard on the Pod, like a spare wheel ($95) and bike rack ($125).
Other accessories available on the Spectrum trailer include a set of roof rack beams ($120), gas struts for the plastic lid ($55), and rear rubber feet ($65) so the trailer can be stored upright.
Boasting 1040 litres of storage space, the Spectrum’s enclosed tub measures 1.85m long by 1.4m wide by 0.7m high, and is available in 30 different colours to match your tow vehicle.
Empty, the rig weighs around 100kg, with the ATM for the unbraked trailer around 700kg.
As well as keeping tents, sleeping bags and other items dry and free of dust, the Spectrum trailer could also double as a large cooler box, with the easy-wash interior with two drainage plugs capable of carrying up to 500kg of ice and drinks.
Small cars, motorcycles or even bicycles are all possible tow vehicles, depending on the amount of cargo.
