The towing ability of Toyota’s very capable LandCruiser has been boosted with the addition of trailer sway control across the 200 Series range.
A similar system to that already available on the Land Rover Discovery 4, the towing aid helps the driver in the event that a trailer starts to swing from side to side.
The system is integrated with existing vehicle stability control technologies, and detects trailer sway based on information from the vehicle's yaw-rate sensor, acceleration sensor and steering sensor.
It’s designed to suppress swaying that can be triggered by factors such as crosswinds, bumpy roads and sharp turns of the steering wheel.
If sway is detected, the system uses deceleration control and yaw-moment control to suppress the effects.
It also warns the driver via the slip indicator in the instrument cluster and alerts following drivers by illuminating the stop lamps.
The LandCruiser, which has an equal class-leading towing capacity of 3500kg, is the first Toyota to be fitted with the electronic towing aid.
Together with other upgrades including front knee airbags for GX and GXL variants, privacy glass for GXL and dusk-sensing headlamps and digital (DAB) radio on the range-topping Sahara, it increases prices across the 200 Series range by up to $1500.
Pricing now starts at $78,990 for the five-seat turbo-diesel GX, rising to $119,990 for the seven-seat turbo-diesel Sahara.
