Kombi caravan for retro enthusiasts

Can't decide between a vintage campervan and modern two-berth caravan? UK-built Dub-Box provides a cool compromise

The Volkswagen ‘Kombi’ was the original campervan, made famous in the 1960s when the hippie movement was in full swing.

Over the years it has been chopped, stretched, converted, and painted with everything from Union Jacks to peace signs. More recently, collector interest has seen quite a few of the humble, air-cooled vans restored to their former glory.

Now a Herefordshire, UK-based business is cashing in on renewed interest in old-school motors with an unusual twist on the Vee-dub camper. The Dub-Box combines the appealing, retro styling of the iconic Kombi with the practicality of a two-berth caravan.

According to its creators, it “draws its inspiration from an infusion of classic American caravans and vintage campers”. Each Dub-Box is custom built for its owner, with choice of modern or retro colours for the fibreglass body to complement interior finish and fabrics.

The main cabin is constructed by welding the back end of two split screen VW campervans together. Each trailer sits aboard a single axle galvanised chassis complete with brakes.

A number of reproduction parts combine with the latest trailer technology and a lightweight 750kg ATM for easy towing.

The front dinette converts into a comfortable double bed and standard items in the kitchen include a two ring gas burner, stainless steel sink, pump action tap, and of course, a retro style fridge.

The Dub-Box also comes with a few modern features including 12/240 volt electricity, LED lighting, smoke alarm and CD player with MP3 player charge and dock.

In true Kombi style, owners can choose from various flooring, blinds, upholstery, cupboards and worktops for that fully personalised look.

UK pricing starts at £13,750 ($22,000), and buyers can also opt for a rolling shell (body shell, floor and door skins on an EU certified chassis) to finish themselves for £5500, and there's also a pop top version on offer for an additional £1700.
