Know your load

SA-based engineering company JLSN Pty Ltd has released a towing load indicator that monitors the weight on the towball

The owner/operator can fit the required attachment in minutes to most 50mm couplings without structural changes to the hitch.  Once the attachment has been fitted, the indicator itself can simply be connected or removed.

It is generally accepted that 10-15 per cent of the total trailer weight should rest on the towball to ensure a relatively stable towing setup, and that this must remain well within the maximum allowable download indicated on the towbar.

It pays to keep an eye on such issues as traffic authorities and especially insurance companies become tougher on them.

Unfortunately, weight proportions can vary depending on how you load the van, which is where an indicator such as this comes in useful - although JLSN points out that the weight readings may vary due to operating conditions and should be used only as a guide.

A 250kg version sells for $199 and a 400kg version for $259, which includes postage Australia-wide. For more information, visit www.jlsn.com.au
