Now entering its third year under new management and ownership, Kimberley Kampers now seems to be well on the road to recovery after going into receivership in 2018.
Under the control of former south-east Queensland dealer, James Cockburn and former General Manager, Brett McLaren, the Ballina, NSW-based camper trailer icon now claims to be the second largest employer in the Ballina area behind the local Council, with its staff now 50-strong – up from 18 just 24 months ago.
As part of its growth, the company has sets its expansion sights on the North American market and says it has shipped more than $1.5m worth of campers and hybrids to the USA with an order pipeline of another $1m.
This is said to be growing after the Kimberley Kruiser S-Class was awarded ‘Editor’s Choice’ for best luxury overland trailer by the Expedition Portal in the USA.
Cockburn said as far as he knows, Kimberley is currently building the first offroad RV manufactured in Australia exclusively for the US market with a right-hand side door and other internal orientation.
Locally, he said Kimberley Kampers' orders are now out to six months, with forward orders exceeding $8 million.
He said that Kimberley has engaged the services of a world-class Honda R&D engineer to assist in improving every facet of its build process, quality and function.
It's also looking to explore the opportunity to make some of its proprietary components, such as suspension and airbags, available to other Australian manufacturers in an effort to help keep Australian manufacturing onshore.
