There’s another new player in the rapidly expanding hard-wall compact hybrid camper market, with Brisbane’s Kelly Campers launching an updated version of its first off-road, pop-top camper this week.
Eighteen months in development, the boxy little hybrid camper is the brainchild of David Willoughby, who runs a metal fabrication business in North Bundaberg and has combined his company’s expertise with his passion for camping to come up with the rugged 9ft Glenrowan camper.
“The Kelly camper has been designed for serious off road users with aluminium external sheeting and aluminium skeletal frame and insulated composite internal sheeting ensuring superior comfort in either hot or cold weather,” he says on the company’s website. A relatively low Tare weight of 1200kg and GVM of 1900kg are attributed to the “factory manager's aircraft manufacturing skills”, while the off-road kit extends to an Ark off-road hitch and jockey wheel, Cruisemaster airbag independent suspension, 12in electric brakes, and optional stone guard.
Buyers also have the option of matching the wheel track to their tow vehicle.
Two people can sleep inside the 2.7m x 1.9m body shell thanks to a queen-sized innerspring mattress, and an optional tent will attach to the fox wing awning to accommodate the kids.
The latest redesign includes new exterior decals as well as a mattress that now folds away to allow room for some internal seating and a fold-down table,
With the electric pop-top roof up, there should be enough headroom for an average adult to stand up, while there's also a new gas strut assisted fold-down spare wheel carrier behind the rear door, that doubles as an entry step.
Cooking is outside on a slide-out stainless steel kitchen with two-burner cooktop, pantry and prep bench, with a separate external compartment for the 108 litre upright Waeco fridge.
Other standard features include 400W solar panels, LED lighting, Bluetooth radio/CD player, 130 litre water storage, gas/electric hot water, and an upgraded Redarc battery system. New compression locks and sealing have also been added to improve the Glenrowan's resistance to dust and water.
There's decent internal and external storage, and a zip-on, external shower/toilet room is also part of the package.
Willoughby, who sported a Ned Kelly-style beard until recently, told a newspaper earlier this year: "The beard is the reason I came up with the name Kelly Campers as my mates affectionately call me that as they say I look like Ned”.
With tow-away pricing from $54,500, the updated Kelly camper will be on display at the Gold Coast Mid Year Caravan and Camping Expo at the Gold Coast Turf Club from July 29-31.
